The Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Serbia conducted a Student Training Course on “Classical and Modern Approaches in Crop Breeding” under the BREEDTECH Erasmus+ Project (work package 2) hosted by Prof. Dragana Miladinovi\u0107 from 22 to 26 September 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training brought together five participants two from Kenya, two from Ethiopia, and one from Palestine for an intensive program designed to strengthen theoretical and practical competencies<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in crop breeding. Ms. Almaz Sebsebew from Oda Bultum University (OBU) actively engaged in lectures, laboratory sessions, and discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course covered topics such as pre-breeding, genetic resource utilization, hybrid and line breeding, stress resistance breeding, tissue culture, molecular breeding, high-throughput phenotyping (HTPP), DNA extraction, and gel electrophoresis. A field visit to IFVCNS experimental sites provided exposure to ongoing research on sunflower, legumes, soybean, and maize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emphasizing hands on experience, the project introduced modern breeding tools and methods, including speed breeding, sunflower emasculation, and root phenotyping. By combining classical<\/p>\n\n\n\n

principles with modern technologies, the course enhanced the research capacity of emerging scientists from Africa and the Middle East. It strengthened international collaboration in crop science and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
