About the College
The College of Natural and Computational Sciences came to being through an evolutionary development process from the then Division of Natural and Social Sciences (DNSS). Then, DNSS evolved to Faculty of Education (FOE) with a mission of training teachers for secondary schools. It was offering bachelors degree in various programs of natural and social science fields. In 2008 once again the College of Natural and Computational Sciences evolved from FOE and since then focusing training students in areas of natural sciences.
As of July, 2009, however, the Faculty of Education was re-structured into Colleges of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences & Law. Currently, the College of Natural and Computational Sciences encompasses three functional departments including the departments of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
These departments train professionals in applied fields (regular program) and weekend program, with the exception of the Departments of Chemistry and Mathematics which currently does not give training in the weekend program. The last batch of undergraduate regular students trained for Biology  in applied science for teaching at secondary schools graduated in the 2017/18 Academic Year. The curriculum for BSc in Statistics, Physics and Sport Science is already endorsed and the program hosts students as of September, 2018.

Department of Biology
Introduction
The science of biology deals with the systematized acquisition of knowledge on living things and their environments in its basic aspects and the use of such knowledge to benefit mankind in its applied aspects. Biological issues are at the heart of the daily life and survival of humans irrespective of differences in culture, geographical location, wealth and levels of advancement.
Biological principles are practiced ranging from primitive societies that use crude ways of getting food and other survival requirements from the immediate environment through hunting and gathering to the most advanced societies that use cutting edge technologies to solve problems that challenge the survival and wellbeing of mankind. Research in climate change, biofuel production, rapid propagation of crops, gene therapy and cloning are examples of the latter category.
The relevance and importance of biological teaching and research to Ethiopia is thus apparent. As a developing nation aspiring to achieve overall advancement, the country has the option to combine both low and high level knowledge in biology to benefit its society particularly in the areas of food security, health, environmental protection and climate change. The country promotes the science of biology through advanced level university study and research. This document is the Harmonized Curriculum of Biology teaching for the Bachelor Degree Program across the various universities Nationwide.
The modular curriculum has been prepared at different levels. The first draft was prepared by committees established by departments of each university. Then the draft documents were harmonized by university clusters and finally the National modular curriculum was developed by an assembly of representatives from the various public universities in the country at a workshop held between October 03 and 05, 2012 at the Ethiopian Management Institute.
The Department of Biology has launched its first undergraduate trainings in Oda Bultum University in 2015/16 in Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biology in regular program, with the objective of producing competent graduates with the required biological knowledge, transferable skills; and good attitude and professional ethics to work in industries, research organizations, health and educational institutions.
These new programs are intended to provide better and ample job opportunities for graduate students in industries, research organizations, health and educational institutions. Currently, the Department of Biology is offering B.Sc. undergraduate programs.

Department of Chemistry
Introduction
Chemistry is about the nature of matter, how to make it, how to measure it, how to model it. In that sense chemistry really matters; it is essential to explaining all the real world. It holds the key to making new drugs, creating new materials, and understanding and controlling material properties of all sorts.  It is no wonder then that chemistry is called the “Central Science”. Traditionally, it is divided into subdisciplines, such as organic, inorganic, physical, biological, theoretical, and analytical, but these distinctions blur as it is increasingly appreciated how all of science, let alone chemistry, is interconnected.
A deeper understanding of chemistry enables students to participate in research and studies involving biotechnology, nanotechnology, catalysis, human health, materials, earth and environmental sciences, and more. Together, faculty, graduate and undergraduate students actively work together within our department developing new probes of biological molecules, modeling protein folding and reactivity, manipulating carbon nanotubes, developing new oxidation and polymerization catalysts, and synthesizing organic molecules to probe ion-channels. The overarching theme of these pursuits is a focus at the atomic and molecular levels, whether this concerns probing the electronic structure and reactivity of molecules as small as dihydrogen or synthesizing large polymer assemblies. The ability to synthesize new molecules and materials and to modify existing biological structures allows the properties of complex systems to be analyzed and harnessed with huge benefit to both the scientific community and society at large.
The Department of Chemistry has launched its first undergraduate trainings in Oda Bultum University in 2016/17 in Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Chemistry in regular program The Department of Chemistry will start to run training with BSc. degree in chemistry with the intention of playing a role towards fulfilling the Country’s needs for high-level qualified chemistry educators.
Mission
The mission of the undergraduate program in Chemistry is to provide students with foundational knowledge in the sub disciplines of chemistry as well as depth in one or more advanced areas, including cutting-edge research. Introductory course work allows students to gain hands-on experience with chemical phenomena, gather data, and propose models and explanations for their observations, thus participating in the scientific process from the start. In advanced labs and lectures, students build an in-depth knowledge of the molecular principles of chemistry empowering them to become molecular engineers comfortable with the methodologies necessary to solve complex problems and effectively articulate their ideas to the scientific community.  Ultimately the analytical thinking and problem solving skills developed within the chemistry major make students successful candidates for a wide range of careers in chemistry and beyond, including engineering, teaching, consulting, medicine, law, science writing, and science policy.
Learning Outcomes
The department expects undergraduate majors in the program to be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes. These learning outcomes are used in evaluating students and the department’s undergraduate program. Students are expected to:
1. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to solve problems in the synthesis, measurement, and modeling of chemical systems.
2. Apply this set of chemical knowledge and skills to analyze scientific data, evaluate and interpret its significance, and articulate conclusions supportable by the data.
3. Be able to construct a scientific hypothesis and devise appropriate experiments to test and evaluate this hypothesis
4.  Communicate scientific research effectively in written and spoken form.

Mathematics is a fundamental field of study that plays a pivotal role in the development of science, technology, business, and computer science. It profoundly influences the socioeconomic development of a society and civilization. Thus, it is imperative that students be equipped with strong Mathematical knowledge and skills which enable them to be productive in areas where rigorous thought and precision of results are emphasized.
Curriculum development is also a dynamic process which requires continuous assessment. Thus updating and harmonizing national curriculum is vital to ensure the quality, standard and relevance in line with the objective conditions of the country. In light with this, the Ministry of
Education, higher education strategy center, has taken the task of harmonization of various national universities science curricula that are underway to accomplish the above objectives. The task demands not only to harmonize the curricula designed by cluster of national universities but also to enrich it by incorporating good practices from exemplary European universities.
Thus, the need to design a viable harmonized B. Sc degree curriculum that meets the current global trend is the order of the day.
